How to Stay Connected on Your Trip for the USAPosted on February 07, 2017
When we travel away from our family and friends we always want to stay connected to them through calls, texts, email, Facebook, Instagram and many other ways. Similarly, if we're traveling for work, we might need to stay connected when we're on the go.
Fortunately, if you're traveling to the USA there's many different ways to maintain a steady connection to family, friends and your workplace.
There's many apps you can install on your Smartphone that provide instant locations of the nearest Wi-Fi hotspots. There are thousands of hotspots in the USA, and not just in typical places such as cafes, hotels and airports. You'll find hotspots in many other locations too such as museums, galleries and public places. The American Museum of Natural History in New York offers free high speed Wi-Fi throughout the entire museum. Just look for the free Wi-Fi on your phone when you arrive and you'll soon be uploading photos of dinosaurs, apes and other cool exhibits. The Museum of Modern Art in New York also offers free Wi-Fi: just search for "MoMA WiFi", connect, and you're good to go.
The many LinkNYC kiosks scattered throughout Manhattan are re-purposed phone booths that now serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot - search through the locations and plot them for your walking route so you can look up the nearest cafe.
Unlike in the UK and Europe where in-flight Wi-Fi has little penetration, almost all domestic airlines in the USA offer in-flight Wi-Fi. You can buy passes on-board by connecting to the Wi-Fi network and following the payment instructions. GoGoAir service American Airlines, Alaska Air, Delta and Virgin America and you can buy a 1 hour pass for $7, an all-day pass for $19, or if you're doing a lot of flights, buy a one month multi-airline pass for $59.95.
Pay as you go USA SIM card
By far the best option is to use a local pay as you go USA SIM card. You won't have to search for free Wi-Fi, and you'll always be connected no matter where you are. USA Pay As You Go SIM Card offer great value deals for SIM cards with high speed 4G data, minutes and texts, and a local American phone number you can give to family and friends back home, as well as to update your Uber profile or give to hotels and tour operators.
